Computer Won't Turn On
A computer that won't turn on is alarming, but it's often something simple — a loose cable, a tripped power strip, or a stuck power state. Work through these in order before worrying about hardware failure.
Common causes
- Power cable is loose or the power strip is switched off
- The computer is stuck in a low-power state and needs a hard reset
- A recently connected USB device or external drive is preventing boot
- RAM or internal component has come loose
- Power supply or battery failure (less common, but happens)
Step-by-step fix
- 1Check the obvious power connectionsUnplug the power cable from both the computer and the wall, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back into a different outlet — not through a power strip. For laptops, remove the battery if it's removable, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug in with battery removed and try to power on.
- 2Disconnect everything externalUnplug all USB devices, external drives, monitors (leave just one), and any docking station. Sometimes a faulty USB device prevents POST (the initial startup check) from completing. Try powering on with nothing connected.
- 3Perform a hard resetHold the power button for 10–15 seconds until the computer fully shuts off (you'll hear fans spin down). Release, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button once normally. This clears a stuck power state that a normal shutdown doesn't fix.
- 4Listen and look for signs of lifeWhen you press power: do you hear fans spin? See any lights? Hear any beeps? Fans spinning but no screen = display or RAM issue. No fans at all = power issue. Beep codes mean a specific hardware diagnostic — search your computer brand + the beep pattern (e.g. '3 beeps HP laptop') for what it means.
- 5Reseat the RAM (desktop only)If you're comfortable opening a desktop case: power off, unplug, open the side panel. Locate the RAM sticks, press the tabs to release them, pull them out, and firmly push them back in until both clips click. RAM that's slightly loose causes a completely dead system.
