Can't Print PDF Files
PDF printing failures are almost never a printer problem — they're almost always a PDF reader or driver issue. Here's how to identify and fix the actual cause.
Common causes
- The PDF is damaged or has security restrictions that block printing
- The PDF reader (Adobe, browser) has a rendering conflict with the printer driver
- Print as image is not enabled for a complex PDF
- The printer driver is outdated and can't handle modern PDF features
Step-by-step fix
- 1Print as imageIn Adobe Acrobat or Reader, go to File → Print → click 'Advanced' → check 'Print as image.' This bypasses the PDF rendering engine and sends a flat image to the printer. It fixes almost all PDF printing problems immediately.
- 2Download and open the PDF in Adobe Reader instead of a browserChrome and Edge have built-in PDF viewers that occasionally fail to print complex documents. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader free, open the PDF in it, and try printing from there.
- 3Try printing to PDF firstIn the print dialog, select 'Microsoft Print to PDF' or 'Save as PDF' as the printer and save a new copy. Then open that new PDF and print it. This flattens forms, layers, and annotations that cause printing failures.
- 4Update your printer driverGo to your printer manufacturer's website (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother) and download the latest full driver package for your model. Old drivers often can't handle PDFs with modern transparency or color profiles.
- 5Check if the PDF is password-protectedOpen the PDF in Adobe Reader and check File → Properties → Security tab. If printing is restricted, you'll need the document password to unlock it. If you created the PDF yourself, try re-exporting it from the original software without restrictions.
